Placenta Processing

Honoring the organ that sustained life. Supporting the body that brought it forward.

At Elemental Birth & Wellness, placenta preparation is approached with deep respect for both physiology and tradition.

Your placenta supported oxygenation, nourishment, hormone production, and protection throughout pregnancy.

After birth, many families choose to honor that work through intentional postpartum preparation.

At Elemental Birth & Wellness we follow the Elemental Placenta Method™, a five-phase approach ensuring:

Safe preparation
Professional handling
Client education
Postpartum integration

This is more than encapsulation.

This is structured postpartum care.

Our services combine professional birth knowledge, safety protocols, and holistic postpartum care to support your recovery during the fourth trimester.

Finding someone to handle your placenta is a deeply personal decision. As a student nurse with specialized training in Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), I bridge the gap between sacred postpartum traditions and rigorous clinical safety.

Transformation does not end at birth.
Postpartum is an integration.

We approach placenta preparation like an alchemical process of transformation:

Preparation → Collection → Transformation → Integration → Restoration

Step 1 — Intake & Preparation Planning
We review your birth plan, hospital logistics, and transport details.

Step 2 — Placenta Collection
Your placenta is retrieved following your birth according to your chosen plan.

Step 3 — Professional Preparation: Transformation (Day one)
Using controlled dehydration and encapsulation techniques.
I arrive with all necessary supplies, including specialized sanitizing agents.
I perform a multi-step disinfection of all surfaces used, leaving you with nothing to do but rest.

Step 4 — Capsule Creation (Day two)
Your placenta is ground and placed into capsules.
On the second day, I grind and encapsulate the placenta, providing you with clear dosage instructions and storage guidelines.

Step 5 — Delivery & Education: Integration
You receive your capsules along with usage guidance, storage guidelines and recovery education.

Typical turnaround:
48–72 hours after birth.

I provide a quiet, respectful presence in your home during those first hazy days of the “fourth trimester.”

Your postpartum journey deserves a professional touch. Let’s ensure your recovery is supported by someone who understands both the biology of birth and the necessity of clinical safety.

Placenta services may not be appropriate in some medical situations. We review eligibility with every client.

Families who:

Value holistic recovery
Want natural postpartum support
Are planning for the fourth trimester
Appreciate traditional practices
Want continuity with their birth team

Placenta consumption has been practiced in various cultures and continues to be chosen by many modern families as part of holistic postpartum recovery.

Placenta services are not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent medical conditions. Education is always provided so clients can make informed decisions.

By choosing in-home processing, you eliminate the “chain of custody” concerns common with transport services. Your placenta never leaves your sight, and your kitchen is transformed into a controlled, sanitary environment where your recovery supplements are prepared with medical-grade precision.

Most processing services take your placenta to a remote location. In-home processing offers a level of transparency and safety that off-site services simply cannot match:

  • Zero Risk of Mix-ups: You have 100% certainty that the capsules you receive are made from your own placenta.
  • Sanitation Excellence: I use hospital-grade disinfectants and EPA-approved protocols to ensure your kitchen is left cleaner than I found it.
  • A Clinical Eye: As a student nurse, I am trained to identify gross abnormalities and can provide an anatomical “tour” of your placenta if you wish to see how it nourished your baby.

I approach every encapsulation with the same level of caution I use in a clinical setting. Your safety and your baby’s safety always come first.

Your placenta is always:

Prepared individually

Handled with sterile technique

Never processed with other clients

Tracked from pickup to delivery

Professional care matters during postpartum recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Benefits of Placenta Processing

Your placenta is a perfect bio-identical organ made by your own body.

• Can help prevent or reduce symptoms of postpartum ‘baby blues’
• Replenishes your iron stores from blood loss during birth, and can prevent postpartum anemia
• Helps to stabilize post birth hormones
• Replenishes B vitamins and energy
• Helps to lessen postpartum bleeding
• Can help to establish/support an early and healthy milk supply  Hormones known to be in the placenta:
• Oxytocin – The ‘feel good’ hormone, creates feelings of bonding, happiness, and pain relief
• Cortisone – Eases stress and unlocks the body’s energy stores
• Interferon – Stimulates the immune system to help fight off infection
• Prostaglandins – Acts as an anti-inflammatory
• Hemoglobin – Replenishes iron, stimulates iron production in the blood
• Urokinase Inhibiting Factor and Factor XIII – Lessens bleeding and promotes faster healing
• Prolactin – Stimulates and promotes healthy lactation.

Risks of Placenta Processing

Though few and rare, there are some risks associated with consuming your placenta.  These risks are similar to risks involving food-borne illness.

They are as follows:

• Unsanitary conditions –If the placenta is not handled and stored properly, or prepared in unsanitary conditions, this puts you at risk of viral and bacterial contamination.

• Pathology –When the placenta is sent to Pathology, there is a chance the placenta has been contaminated with chemicals, that the equipment used for examination has not been properly sterilized, and even the wrong placenta being returned to you.

• Insufficient dehydration –If the placenta is not dehydrated at a high enough temperature, there is a risk of mold and bacterial contamination.

Your specialist is trained and certified in Blood-Borne Pathogens, and follows strict OSHA standards for sanitation of the workspace, tools and materials used before, during and after encapsulation.

Is it safe to process the placenta in my own kitchen?

Absolutely. In many ways, it is safer than a remote lab. Because I am BBP-trained, I treat your kitchen space with the same “universal precautions” used in a hospital. I use a barrier system to protect your counters and hospital-grade, EPA-registered disinfectants (such as 10% bleach solution or professional Cavicide) that are proven to kill bloodborne pathogens, ensuring your home remains a clean, safe environment for your family.

What is the difference between the “Traditional” and “Raw” methods?

As a medically minded processor, I look at this through the lens of preparation and bioavailability:

  • Traditional Method: Inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine, the placenta is steamed (often with ginger and lemon) before dehydration. This process effectively “cooks” the tissue, which some find more gentle on the digestive system.
  • Raw Start Method: The placenta is sliced and dehydrated without steaming. Proponents suggest this better preserves heat-sensitive enzymes and hormones, though it may result in a more “potent” energy boost.

Can I still encapsulate if I had an epidural or C-section?

Yes. Most common labor medications (like Pitocin, epidurals, or antibiotics) are processed by your body and do not contraindicate encapsulation. However, if your medical team suspects a uterine infection (Chorioamnionitis) or if the placenta needs to be sent to Pathology for testing, we will prioritize your health and safety over the encapsulation process.

How do you prevent cross-contamination?

Since I only process one placenta at a time in the client’s own home, the risk of cross-contamination with another person’s biological material is zero. All of my reusable equipment is put through a rigorous high-heat sterilization process and a chemical soak between clients, following the same logic we use for surgical instrumentation.

What if I have a “meconium” birth?

If meconium (baby’s first stool) was present at birth, it is not an automatic disqualification. I perform a thorough clinical wash of the placenta to ensure all debris is removed before the steaming and dehydration process begins, which reaches temperatures sufficient to kill bacteria.

How many capsules will I get?

While every placenta is as unique as the baby it nourished, the average yield is typically between 100 and 200 capsules. This depends on the size of the placenta and the preparation method chosen.

Meet Your Specialist: Erin Young

Bridging Clinical Safety with Postpartum Tradition

Student Nurse & Placenta Encapsulation Specialist

Hello! I’m Erin. I am a dedicated student nurse with a passion for maternal-child health and a deep respect for the physiological power of the postpartum body.

In the clinical world, I am trained to prioritize safety, sanitation, and evidence-based practice. In my work as an encapsulation specialist, I bring those same “medically minded” standards into your home. I believe that your postpartum recovery deserves more than just tradition—it deserves the highest level of professional care.

By combining clinical education with a passion for postpartum wellness, I provide a service that respects both the science of the body and the sacredness of your home.

Why My Nursing Background Matters for You

While many processors come from a purely holistic background, my education in nursing provides a unique layer of security for my clients:

  • BBP Expertise: I maintain current Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) certification, ensuring that my handling of biological material meets the same safety benchmarks used in hospital settings.
  • Anatomical Knowledge: My studies in pathophysiology and anatomy allow me to understand your placenta not just as a supplement, but as the complex organ it is. I can answer your “why” and “how” questions with clinical clarity.
  • Safety First: I am trained to recognize contraindications. If there is a medical reason why encapsulation might not be safe for you (such as signs of infection or specific lab requirements), I will always prioritize your long-term health over a sale.
